법왕청신문 이정하 기자 | 창덕궁昌德宮은 세계문화유산 및자연유산의 보호에 관한 협약」에 따라 1997년 12월 6일 유네스코가 정한 세계유산으로 등록되었다.

'세계유산'이란 세계적으로 뛰어나고 보편적 가치가 있어 인류 전체를 위하여 보호하여야 할 문화유산을 말하는데 창덕궁이 세계유산으로 등록된 것은 인류의 문화유산으로서 그 가치를 국제적으로 인정받았음을 의미한다.

조선의 3대 임금인 태종 5년(1405년)에 경복궁의 이궁(離宮,궁성 밖에 마련된 임금의 거처)으로 건립한 창덕궁은 조선시대의 전통적인 건축으로 자연 경관을 배경으로 한 건축과 조경의 예술적 가치가 뛰어나며 특히 왕궁의 정원인 후원後苑은 한국의 대표적인 전통 정원으로 손꼽힌다.

Ch'angdokkung Palace was registered on the UNESCO World Cultural  Heritage List under the provisions of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage on December 6 1997.

A World Heritage is defined as something which has distinctive and invaluable cultural properties and which needs special preservatory care so that its values can be shared by the people of the world.

The palace was constructed as a detached palace in 1405, the 5th year of king T'aejong of the Choson Dynasty. With its unique palatial layout,its exquisite buildings, and the landscaping of its rear garden, it is known as the epitome of Korean architecture.
