The Embassy of Nepal in Seoul holds a seminar on Buddhism in Nepal

In collaboration with Nepal Tourism Board and Dongguk University

By  Lee Jon Young |  The Embassy of Nepal and Nepal Tourism Board, in collaboration with the Dongguk University, co-hosted a seminar on Buddhism in Nepal titled "Historicity and Practice of Buddhism in Nepal" at Dongguk University in Seoul on May 24, 2024.

The seminar, which was organized on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Nepal-Korea diplomatic relations and the 2568 Buddha Jayanti and supported by the International Cultural Properties Strategy Center (ICPSC), aimed at sharing Nepal's role in promoting and nurturing Buddhism, and developing Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, the embassy said.

Lumbini is also the educational soil of Gautam Buddha (Shakyamuni Buddha), where he resided for 29 years since his birth and received teachings from renowned scholars and sages of his time.

Delivering welcome remarks instead of Amb. Jyoti Pyakuryal (Bhandari) of Nepal to Korea, Pushpa Raj Bhattarar, Deputy Chief of Mission (Minister Counsellor), said, “The relationship between Nepal and Korea traces back for centuries, rooted in the profound ideals and teachings of Buddha. The presence of Korea's Buddhist temple in Lumbini will serve as a strong symbol of our deepening cultural ties, fostering a connection that will resonate with future generations of both our nations.”

Noting that this seminar underscores the enduring friendship and cultural exchange between our two countries, Pushpa Raj Bhattarar said, “It presents a momentous opportunity to explore the rich tapestry of Buddhism and its profound influence on the cultural and spiritual landscape of Nepal.

“As we reflect on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautam, known as Gautama Buddha after enlightenment, we are reminded of the profound connection between Nepal and Buddhism. Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, holds a special place in the hearts of Buddhists worldwide, nestled in the heart of Nepal.”

Commenting that Nepal proudly hosts a vibrant and diverse Buddhist community, encompassing traditions such as Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana, he said “The sacred land is adorned with a plethora of monasteries, stupas, and temples, each resonating with centuries of history and profound spiritual significance. The Greater Lumbini Area, including sites such as Titaurakot, Gotihawa, and Niglihawa, within a 30-kilometer radius, exemplifies Nepal's status as the land of Buddhas, blessed with the presence of three enlightened beings, Siddhartha Gautam, Kanakmuni and Krakuchhanda Buddha.”

He added, “Beyond its religious significance, Buddhism has profoundly influenced Nepal's cultural, artistic, and architectural landscape. The Buddha Jayanti resonates with joyous celebrations, embodying the essence of our Buddhist heritage.

“As we convene this seminar today, let us reaffirm our commitment to preserving and promoting the teachings of Buddha and conserving our holy sites for generations to come. May this seminar foster deeper understanding and appreciation of Nepal's rich Buddhist heritage, nurturing greater harmony and unity among us all.”

Mr. Ramesh Kumar Dhungel (Ph.D from Colombia University), Executive Chairman and Professor at the Lumbini College of Buddhism and Himalayan Studies, Nepal, delivered a keynote speech on “Historicity and Practice of Buddhism in Nepal."

More than 100 foreign and domestic guests, including Ven. Jin Hyo, vice director of social and international affairs department of Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism Headquarters, and Musang Beophyeon, Abbot of YeollinSeon Won, attended the international seminar.
